Good-natured mercenary Esper and her alien companion Kubu need to lay low for a while. Esper’s friend sends her to Symbiona, a near-idyllic planet. However, when they arrive, they soon find out that things aren’t as they seem. Esper’s friend’s brother lives on the planet but he’s a rogue wizard and isn’t happy to see strangers and sends Esper and Kubu away. They soon realize that very few people in Symbiona like off-worlders. Luckily, they meet Benny, a good-natured chef who has married a local woman and settled in Symbiona. Even though the couple have kids, the locals don’t accept Benny. That troubles Esper who decides to help Benny, no matter if he wants the help or not.

This was another fast-paced adventure. Esper’s need to help others shine through and get her into trouble. Kubu grows a bit but he’s still the lovable dog-like alien who can’t get enough food.

The town feels quickly eerie: the locals call each other ”brother” and ”sister” and are very insular. Most off-worlders, such as traders and people bringing in supplies, know enough not to stay long. The town doesn’t even have a proper legal system.

This was a light-hearted science fantasy adventure. We get to see more of Esper in action as a wizard rather than a fighter. However, I think the magic could be better defined. Most of the time, only her morality stops her from using magic more and more effectively.
