Booking Through Thursday

And–the reverse of last week’s question. Name one book that you hope never, ever, ever gets made into a movie (no matter how good that movie might be).

There are lots of these. Books and movies work different. Movies work on visuals and so can’t really rely on internal monologue too much. In fact, many urban fantasy books have funny internal monologue even when the things that happen aren’t funny at all. If the main character’s thoughts weren’t shown, the tone of the story could be quite different. Of course, I’d love to see someone trying to film, for example, Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden books just to if it can be done.

I used to think that multi-volume epic fantasies with multiple POV characters would be pretty hard to film. I liked the Lord of the Rings movies, though the did cut a lot of material and inserted a few pretty pointless ones, but even Jackson couldn’t fit into just one movie.

So, I’ll just name a book I really dislike: Donaldson’s Lord Foul’s Bane. Sadly, I don’t think this would be first movie where a rapist is the protagonist.
