CAN you judge a book by its cover?

If you mean the quality of the writing, then no. If you mean will I like the book (which doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the quality of writing ;)) a pretty resounding no. Some of my favorite authors have covers that range from bland to awful.

However, there are certainly other things you can find from the cover. Genre, for example. Classics tend to have different covers than science fiction. In the fantasy field, you can most likely also separate epic from urban by cover.

It’s sometimes possible to also tell how much the publisher is investing into the book and the author. Hard cover vs. paper back, stock photos vs Michael Whelan paintings. However, a mediocre book can easily have a lot of marketing and gorgeous covers while a brilliant book doesn’t.
