Do you cheat and peek at the ends of books? (Come on, be honest.)

Only if the book is very predictable I’ll look at the end to see if there’s anything surprising. Rarely.

I find the word “cheating” very interesting here. I feel that that word should only be used if I’ve made a promise to someone not to look at the endings of books. I haven’t. But do we have some sort of implicit contract with the author to read the book from front to back? We are taught to read that way and sometimes it can be hard to break free from that mold. For example, it’s hard for me to read short stories (or poems) in an anthology in different order than from page one to the last page, even when the anthology has different authors.
