There’s something wonderful about getting in on the ground floor of an author’s career–about being one of the first people to read and admire them, before they became famous best-sellers.

Which authors have you been lucky enough to discover at the very beginning of their careers?

And, if you’ve never had that chance, which author do you WISH you’d been able to discover at the very beginning?

I don’t think I’ve ever discovered a famous-to-be author at the start of their career. I’ve read a few debut authors in the recent years but I’ve no idea if any of them will come wildly successful.

The thing is, that I read a lot of series and I love it when I can read a series reasonably quickly instead of waiting for years (or decades) between the books. But I have a few favorites who write stand-alones, so I guess reading Robin McKinley or Patricia McKillip at the start might have been great.
